2021 & Beyond – A Year In Review

We are so grateful for your support of The Open Shelter and our mission of “Staying Behind With Those Left Behind”.  In 2021 because of YOUR support we were able to keep our doors OPEN and resume normal services for those we serve even in the face of a pandemic.  We are approaching nearly 40 years of continued service for the most vulnerable in our community; homeless and marginally housed men, women and children.  The only reason we are able to keep this commitment is because of YOU.

Because of your support, we were able to assist 2,181 individuals, 913 of whom were “living on the streets”.  58,760 sack lunches and 97,635 ‘to-go’ meals were provided thanks to your generous support.  We also assisted 62 men and women through our “Payeeship” program, which helps homeless and recently homeless persons who need third party money management.  In 2021, we helped transition 59 people into housing.  We assisted those ‘living on the land’ 1,671 times with items such as tents, tarps, backpacks, sleeping bags, ‘bed rolls’ and candles.  3,168 instances of clothing assistance and 1,050 hygiene kits were provided.
We also allow access to phones, copier, fax and computers in addition to providing a mailing address.

We are grateful for the 12 years St. John’s Evangelical Protestant Church UCC partnered and worked with us.  But in 2022, we are excited to announce that also because of YOUR support, we are able to move into a bigger and better space.  A 10,000 square foot building that provides many exciting possibilities and opportunities for us and those we serve!  Please continue to support us and your neighbors who trust us to help them survive.  For this next chapter in The Open Shelter’s future to be a successful one, we need YOU.
