Kent & Mary Beittel have been tireless advocates for the homeless and marginally housed in Central Ohio for many, many years. Plenty of times in The Open Shelter’s 34 year history it has stared down an uncertain future. Unfortunately, we face that again as Kent & Mary are struggling with medical concerns as she battles cancer and the agency itself is dealing with fundraising declines that put it’s future in doubt.
We would like to thank Rita Price & Photographer Eric Albrecht of The Columbus Dispatch for their moving article detailing the issues Kent & Mary and our agency face. You can read the article HERE.
After reading the article, please make a donation to continue Kent & Mary’s legacy of helping those most vulnerable in our community. Thank You.
Our Director, Kent Beittel, is featured in “Scenes From The Front Lines Of Homelessness”, an article in March’s Columbus Monthly.
Homelessness often appears monolithic, entrenched and clouded by stereotypes. A closer look reveals an alarming spike in numbers, a system struggling to help—and the human face of unrelenting need.
You can read the article HERE.
After reading the article, please hit the Donate Button & help us help the most vulnerable in our community. Thank You.
Solomon Dean is our Deputy Director of Day Services. He has been with us for nearly 20 years. Solomon is definitely the “back bone”of our agency. Those we serve, the homeless & marginally housed, have grown to know him, respect him and value him as he helps them on a daily basis.
Karen Brown of ABC 6/FOX 28 recently profiled Solomon as part of their “On Your Side Champions” Series.
See Karen’s profile HERE.
Help us & Solomon help the homeless & marginally housed in our community.

Thank You to Pastor Diane Thatcher, Meadow Park Church of God & it’s parishioners for supporting The Open Shelter and allowing us to be part of Faith Promise Sunday. Meadow Park has been a long-time supporter of our mission and those we serve.
Faith Promise monies are given to local, national and international ministries and missionaries with whom Meadow Park has built positive partnerships. A promise made in faith is not a pledge, but rather, it’s a promise – a step in faith to trust God for an amount of money and, then, wait patiently and confidently on Him to provide the funds.
One of the many ways Meadow Park helps is through it’s “Lunches Of Love” that is led by Terri Schoenberger. Terri, family & friends put together 200 delicious sack lunches for those we serve once a month. We and those we serve are grateful for this support.
